In our office, our goal is to supply periodontal treatment to control the cause and risk factors of gum disease. Through various procedures, we may also repair the damage present and restore your oral health to its optimal condition. Dr. Sheldon offers both non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy in order to address a wide range of cases.
Thanks to our highly-trained, meticulous hygienists, we can offer excellent non-surgical therapy. Each of our therapists has at least fifteen years of experience in hygiene with a focus on periodontal therapies. As such, they are up to date on the newest technologies and procedures; and can reduce your need for surgical therapy.
Some of the advances we take advantage of include state-of-the-art ultrasonic scalers and the dental endoscope. Our scalers are designed to clean root surfaces with maximum effectiveness. The dental endoscope is a tiny camera no larger than the size of a pin head. We are able to place this camera below the gum line to assess the condition of gum tissue.
In order to maintain a conservative approach, we begin with non-surgical therapies whenever possible. After treatment, your gums are reevaluated to determine the success of the treatment you have received. Should surgical therapy be necessary, the initial non-surgical therapy assists in maximizing comfort and encourage re-growth of periodontal support.
A standard surgical therapy is guided tissue regeneration, which rebuilds the periodontal support which has been lost. In this technique, gum tissue is gently eased away from the tooth. This makes room for the periodontal infection to be cleaned away. Once cleaned, a gel or bone powder is placed into the pocket surrounding the tooth to stimulate new bone growth. This restorative procedure takes up to one hour per tooth. We perform this treatment with either local anesthesia or sedation to assure your absolute comfort. Once completed, no other pain medication should be required.
For many patients, the anxiety over treatment stops them from obtaining what is needed to correct periodontal disease. With periodontal treatment from Dr. Sheldon and his skilled staff, you can feel comfortable and confident that you will not experience pain during any procedure. Removing periodontal disease is far too important to avoid treatment.
