Dental Crowns and Bridges

I was so happy with
all aspects of my treatment with Dr. Sheldon and his staff. Their care and concern went far beyond anything I had previously experienced in a
dental or periodontal office.

Our goal as dentists is to help our patients maintain their oral health through preventative measures. In some cases, however, there is a need for restorative care. Starting with the most conservative options, we will first look at dental fillings to maintain proper function and tooth structure. When this is not possible, crowns may be the most suitable course of action.

A dental crown could be called a "cap", as it fits right over an affected tooth to restore aesthetics and strength. A crown may be applied independently, for one tooth; or with a bridge, to restore natural function when a tooth is missing.

Some of the most common applications for dental crowns are:
  • To replace a large filling
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To construct a dental bridge
  • Repair of a broken tooth
  • Repair of a tooth that has been damaged by decay
Crowns may be fabricated out of a number of specialized materials. Metal alloy is commonly used, with gold being the most biocompatible choice. While metal crowns are extremely strong and long lasting, most people prefer not to have the look of metal in their smile. For that reason, porcelain fused to metal crowns are very popular. Porcelain matches the look of natural teeth and the metal underneath provides the strength needed for years of use. This option is most suitable for use on molars, as a dark line may appear at the gum line from the metal under the porcelain. Other materials used to construct dental crowns are resin, ceramic, and all porcelain. Every patient is unique; Dr. Sheldon will advise you regarding the type of crown that is most suitable to your circumstances.

In a dental bridge, two crowns are used in order to anchor an artificial tooth to restore a beautifully functional smile. Using adjacent teeth as anchors, an artificial tooth is held in the spot where a tooth has been lost or extracted. This restorative treatment allows for more confidence when speaking, smiling or eating.

Dental crowns are a long lasting solution to more significant dental damage. With regular check-ups and good oral hygiene habits, your dental crown can stay in place for over ten years.
